Matthew Porto is an Italian-American poet from Long Island, NY. He earned a bachelor’s in English at the University of Scranton, where literary Modernism as well as Jesuit theology and philosophy had a large impact on his thinking. For one year after his undergraduate work, he lived and taught English in Tainan, Taiwan. In 2016, he completed an MFA in Creative Writing, poetry, at Boston University. There, he studied with poets Robert Pinsky and Karl Kirchwey and capped off his degree with the Robert Pinsky Global Fellowship, which funded an extended trip to Greece in pursuit of Homer’s vanished world.
Matthew’s doctorate in English, completed in 2021 at Texas Tech University, is also concentrated in Creative Writing, poetry. His dissertation formed the basis for his first collection of poems, Moon Grammar, published with Slant Books in 2024.
